Mother Nature bests high school football on Friday

Week 2 of the prep football season was expected to be even more exciting than opening night, but it never had the chance. Rain and lightning delayed or postponed many area contests, pushing most of the action to Saturday.

The battle of Eau Claire-La Crosse schools were anticipated to be two of the more competitive match-ups Friday night. La Crosse Logan and Eau Claire North both earned impressive victories over Eau Claire Memorial, and La Crosse Central, respectively, setting up a showdown between 1-0 teams.

Each team scored on its opening drive Friday at Swanson Field before the lightning came, emptying the stands and sending the players into the high school. Fans, players and coaches waited until 8:30 p.m., when the announcement of a postponement was finally made.

Across town at Veterans Memorial Field, Central and Memorial started 15 minutes earlier in hopes of avoiding the weather, but were postponed ahead of the Rangers-Huskies game. Both rivalries will pick back up Saturday afternoon.

Other games throughout the Coulee Region were suspended in the first half or never even got started. Click here to see when your team plays.
