La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - The 2nd annual Charlie Miller Memorial Bow-tie Classic Golf Outing and Knowledge Open was held Saturday afternoon for a good cause.

Over 80 golfers participated in the event, with registration being $75 per person to compete in teams of 4 in a 18 hole golf scramble. Foursomes competed to win $1,000 in prize money awarded to the La Crosse public schools the teams represented on the golf course.

Golfers had a chance to win a 2014 Dodge Dart (courtesy of Pischke Motors) by hitting a hole in one on Hole No. 7 during the event. Other prizes included a $500 travel voucher provided by Travel Leaders. With the generous support of sponsors, including the family of Dr. Miller, the event helps support the overall work of the foundation as well as generate $1,000 in prize money for immediate grants to La Crosse schools represented at the outing.

To make the outing interesting and also educational, the event included a unique feature: the Knowledge Open Challenge. At each hole on the course, questions are asked by National Honor Society students. As a team, the groups answered the questions during its round of play. Teams' final scores were based on their golf game as well as their performance on the quiz.

Richard Swantz, the former superintendent of schools and current president of the La Crosse Common Council, worked closely with Dr. Miller, who served on the Board of Education from 1977 to 1991. "During his long tenure as a member and the president of the Board of Education, Charlie dealt with significant school financial and political challenges, but he never took his eye off the ball - the children he served!" Swantz said. "High quality education was the standard he would not compromise."

Sponsors of the golf event are: Festival Foods, Marine Credit Union, Mathy Construction and Gundersen Health System. Additional support is provided by Bray Architects, Travel Leaders, Pischke Motors, Fowler & Hammer, and the Charles H. Miller III family, plus numerous individual and corporate hole sponsors.

The La Crosse Public Education Foundation's mission is to enhance learning opportunities for students in the School District of La Crosse and to promote community understanding and support for public education. In the 2013-14 school year, the foundation provided more than $43,000 in grants to district teachers and schools, plus provided nearly $22,000 to help students overcome roadblocks to achievement in areas such as nutrition, transportation, academic and co-curricular support.
