Owen, WI (WXOW) - -
The Mauel family has been making ice cream for nearly a century. And it all started in a small creamery that Henry Mauel bought in 1914.
“He enjoyed making ice cream,” said John Mauel, Owner of Mauel's Sunshine Ice Cream in Owen, WI. “He worked until he was in his eighties. So he enjoyed the business very much!”
Henry Mauel Sr. participated in the dairy manufacturing course at UW-Madison in 1914 and started making cheese and ice cream soon after! In 1960 he sold the business to his son Henry Jr. who passed it on to his son John in 1993.
“That whole idea of making ice cream,” said Mauel, “and being a part of the business and my grandfather was always proud to make a good quality ice cream so I've kind of carried that tradition on.”
In addition to providing quality ice cream, the three generations have a tradition of attending short courses at UW-Madison
“I think what we have on our side,” said Joanne Gauthier, Outreach Specialist at the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research in Madison, WI, “is people who are passionate about carrying on that tradition of education from a hundred years ago through today!”
It's that passion which helped several dairy businesses achieve success over many generations.
“We're able to take what we teach here,” said Gauthier, “and send it out into all parts of the state to help Wisconsin and many different industries grow and prosper.”
John Mauel is proud to keep that tradition going in his family business.
“When somebody comes and tells you- you have a good product and stuff like that, that's kind of what makes the job enjoyable,” said Mauel. “That you're doing something that everyone enjoys.”
Mauel's ice cream is offered regionally in the Eau Claire, Wausau and Medford areas and is available at many local fairs and events for a cool treat. For more about Mauel's products log on to www.mauels.com.
