WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- The case of an infant's body found in the Mississippi River on September 5, 2011, has yet to be solved. Nearly three years since Baby Angel was found near Winona, her death and short life have remained a mystery.
Winona County Sheriff David Brand has visited the newborn's grave site every month since she was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery on April 7, 2012. Nearing the third anniversary of her discovery, Brand is imploring anyone with information about the infant to come forward.
"When you have someone that has a child and lets them go or puts them in the river, I think that's pretty bad. That's pretty sad,” said Brand.
The newborn was wrapped in a canvas bag with two angel figurines and a medallion inside, hence her name. She was discovered by boaters floating down the Mississippi River on Labor Day weekend 2011. Although the sheriff's office has received tips as recently as this year, not one has provided new information. Despite the dead ends, Sheriff Brand said he won't stop looking for the baby's family.
"I don't give up,” said Brand. “I continue to work for you folks and everybody here and I don't give up on what I believe is right and I never will give up, even when I retire".
Anyone with information about the death of Baby Angel is asked to contact Winona Area Crime Stoppers at 507-457-6530.
