UW-L football hopes to start season off on right foot

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - The UW-L football season is just hours away now, the preseason all but over. The Eagles are hoping to start their 2014 campaign off on the right foot with a win over the University of Dubuque on Saturday night.

Last season, UW-L started the season 0-5, including a 35-24 opening night loss to the Spartans. How nice then would it be to start off on the other foot this year.

"We're hoping to take away a win. Obviously win or lose be proud of it either way but we're confident coming into Week 1 here," junior starting quarterback Trent Cummings said. "We're more excited more than ever. We've been waiting a long time to get back out on the field so we're excited."

"We got a tough schedule," said senior linebacker Mitch Hawkins. "It's tough looking ahead to those first five games but you take it one at a time and try to go 1-0 every week and it's not as daunting."

Head coach Joel Dettwiler wants to win too, but is concerned about his squad playing a complete game on both sides of the ball.

"They're going to make some plays and hopefully we're going to make some plays," he said. "I want to see our defense tackle well and be physical. I want to see our special teams perform. From a coaching standpoint, what's really going to make me happy is a complete team effort."

Kickoff is 6 p.m. Saturday night at Chalmers Field.
