A local family's endowment allows the School District of La Crosse to support music education.
The La Crosse Public Education Foundation announced Tuesday that the McGavock Family Endowment for Music Education was established to fund programs or projects for musical education in the district.
The endowment is named in memory of brothers Ronald and Philip McGavock. Ronald McGavock, better known in the community as realtor and professional entertainer Ronnie Eastman lived in La Crosse with his family until his death in 1993. Philip McGavock moved to La Crosse to be near his brother and attend university. He eventually moved to Illinois where he enjoyed a career as a music educator. He passed away in 2013.
Ronald McGavock's daughter Melissa said in a statement that she hopes the endowment "can lay the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of music for many young women and men within the La Crosse public schools."
David Stoeffler, executive director of the La Crosse Public Education Foundation said that the gift "will have a lasting impact on our schools and on our children. Music can be a powerful inspiration in people's lives and the McGavock Family Endowment will help make La Crosse a better place."
Grants from the endowment will vary according to program and project needs.
