"At one point, I asked for a sweatshirt to be sent from home. And when I got it in the mail, there was dog hair on it. I think that was the first time that I really realized that I was missing them," said Sergeant Krista Coey about missing her two Great Danes during a nine month deployment to Afghanistan.
The soldier flew back into Volk Field Monday and immediately traveled to Diggity Dog Daycare on French Island to reunite with her girls Calla and Wrigley.
"It sounds silly," said Coey, " I don't have kids; I have them."
The two Great Danes were overwhelmed with excitement when Coey stepped into the room. It was an emotional homecoming for Coey as well.
"I was crying before I even came in," said Coey.
This was the soldier's second deployment. Although it may not be Coey's last, she takes comfort in knowing she'll be greeted with wet kisses and warm hugs when she returns home.
