Winona, MN (WXOW) - -
Madison Elementary School physical education teacher Nate Pollock is bringing reading and math to his students via dance, thanks to this month's Tools for Schools Award.
Pollock was awarded a $500 check from WXOW, SSE Music, and Brenengen Auto.
Pollock plans to use the award to buy "GeoMotion Fitness and Dance," a program that teaches students addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division while they dance.
"The best part of it is that they're moving while learning. And a lot of research has showed that for storage in your short and longterm memory, the best way to learn is to do it while moving," Pollock said.
Pollock said the program is also an opportunity for kids who might enjoy dance more than typical team sports to get active. "There are some students that team sports, or moving activity of throwing or catching, doesn't work for them, but dancing is a great way."
The Tools for Schools Award is given monthly to a deserving teacher or class in the area.
