Big moments in Outback Bowl history

Posted: Updated:
There have been plenty of exciting moments since the first Outback Bowl game in 1986.

In fact, prior to 1995, when Outback Steakhouse became the sponsor, the game was known as the Hall of Fame Bowl. Its been the Outback Bowl ever since.

On the field, the game has seen its share of memorable events.

-Jan. 1, 2000: Georgia, after spotting Purdue 25 points, comes roaring back to score 28 unanswered points to win only the second OT bowl game in history. The Bulldogs scoring spree also marks the biggest comeback in college bowl history.

-Jan. 1, 2010: It took ten years for the next overtime game. Auburn beats Northwestern 38-35 as both teams tie or set nine NCAA and 39 Outback Bowl records.

Jan. 2, 2012: For only the third time in bowl history, Michigan State and Georgia go to triple overtime to decide a winner. MSU's defense blocks a Georgia punt to secure the 33-30 win for the Spartans.

Both Wisconsin and Auburn have a history with the Outback Bowl. The Auburn Tigers have a 2-1 record at the bowl, with wins in 1990 (Ohio State), and that 2010 overtime thriller. Their one loss came in 1996 to Penn State.  The Badgers have four previous appearances in Tampa, but only one win in 1995 over Duke. They lost the other three in 1998 and 2005 (both times to Georgia), and most recently in 2008 with a defeat by Tennessee.
