Former Eau Claire American Legion manager accused of embezzlement

Eau Claire (WQOW) - -

The former manager of an American Legion bar in Eau Claire is accused of embezzling money from the bar.

Dean Schmitz, who's from Chippewa Falls, was the manager of the American Legion Post 53 bar on Water Street from fall of 2012 until April of the following year. According to charges filed this week, Schmitz stole, at a minimum, $15 thousand. Investigators say more could be missing, but they could not determine an amount because Schmitz failed to keep proper records for the bar. The extent of the embezzlement was discovered when the State Department of Revenue shut the bar down last year for failing to pay sales taxes. Officials then learned the bar's checking account was empty.

Schmitz allegedly took the money by writing checks to himself, taking cash out of the cash register, and installing a credit card reader at the bar that sent all credit card transactions to his personal business account. Schmitz is due in court on January 15th.
