The Monroe County Jail project, approved last year, is three weeks behind schedule in construction due to the winter weather.
The project, currently in “phase one,” includes building the new jail and one of the new courtrooms.
"A lot of times when it is below zero, the cranes can't operate due to the hydraulics freezing up and gelling up, so they can't run when it's below zero, so things are slowly progressing on the outside,” Monroe County Sheriff Scott Perkins said. "There is a majority of the building is enclosed already, so they are pumping heat inside. So what's not being done outside, there are a lot of projects being completed inside."
The new jail will have 180 beds—up from 68 in the current jail. Sheriff Perkins said they expect the first phase of the project to be completed no later than mid-September.
