Women's Heart Disease Awareness

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

Heart Disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S.

It's the cause of death in one of every three women.

Mayo Clinic Health System said it's often thought of as a man's disease but that is not the case.

Women are just likely to have a heart attack. But often women' symptoms are different.

Most people think of chest pain when having a heart attack but for women is commonly back pain.

"I think the biggest thing is just awareness," Heather Mpemwangi, a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner at Mayo said. "It can happen to you, it can happen to your friends no matter what age. Know the signs and symptoms of Heart Disease and then seek medical attention when you are having these symptoms."

Mpemwangi said the best prevention is to maintain a healthy diet, exercise and not smoke.

It is also important to be aware of your family history.
