West Salem updates garbage pickup system

Posted: Updated:

The Village of West Salem is updating their trash pickup service, making more room for recycle and saving money in the long-run.

Hilltopper Refuse and Recycling is delivering 2,800 new 64 gallon trash and recycling carts to all West Salem homes.

Each home will get a blue cart for recycle and a brown for trash.

The new 64 gallon recycle carts will replace the 18 gallon bins that are currently used.

Hilltopper said there are a few reasons for the change.

"The efficiency we'll pick up with the drivers, a lot less equipment to run the routes. For the benefit of West Salem, it's cheaper. They are going to save in the long run," Gary Hougom with Hill topper Refuse and Recycling Service said.

The village said it will save $26,000 a year.

Trash pickup will remain the same, every Monday. Recycle will be collected every other week.

New services will begin on April 6.
