Sparta wrestling is having a banner year.
The team qualified for the WIAA State Team Tournament for the 2nd time in 4 years.
Then last weekend, eight individuals advanced on to state.
That's a new school record.
This all happened under first year-head coach Mike Roddick.
He says his main focus was improving the team's performance. The individual success has been a bonus.
But no one on this squad is surprised with the level of success this season.
"I knew coming in that we had a lot of talented guys, it's just a matter of making them a team and getting them to believe in each other and making each other better every day and that's exactly what they did," Roddick said.
"It's been a good break-through year. We've been able to make it to team state again and hopefully make a run there. It's just been a lot of fun, a lot of hard work. It's good to see that it's finally paying off," said John Roddick, a 4-time state qualifier.
The WIAA State Individual Wrestling Meet starts Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison and concludes Saturday evening with the championship bouts.
