Onalaska, WI (WXOW) -

Sixth graders at Onalaska Middle School will be learning about genetics and DNA hands-on thanks to the Tools for Schools award.

Peggy Vogel is this month's winner of the $500 award and plans to put the money toward DNA Replication and Transcription K'Nex kits.

These kits help students understand the structure of DNA and allow them to model the replication process.

"They can physically manipulate it," Vogel said. "They can build it, they can break it down, they can build it up again, and then we can do some problem solving about, okay, what happens with genetics and how does it change, and how do the mutations take place?"

Right now Onalaska Middle School has to borrow the kits from a neighboring district.

"We found out this year by borrowing theirs," Vogel said, "that the kids understood it better, they got really excited about it, and we thought it would be a great supplement."

WXOW, SSE Music, and Brenengen Auto help give the Tools for Schools Award to one deserving teacher or class in the area each month.
