UPDATE: One person is injured following a fire at Lunda Construction in the town of Brockway early Thursday morning.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera, the Black River Falls Fire Department received a call at 5:31 a.m. reporting smoke coming from the Lunda Construction building.

Fire crews said when firefighters arrived on scene the mechanical shop portion of the building was on fire.

“That section of the building is about 130 feet by 100 feet and it's completely destroyed,” Sheriff Waldera said.

Additionally, fire crews were able to maintain some of the utilities in the building. Apart from the shop area, no other part of the building received damage.

“The fire department was able to keep some of the building up and operational,” Waldera said. “But we have Black River Falls Utilities and WE Energy here shutting off power into the damaged area.”

Firefighters were challenged by the cold weather which caused icy conditions according to Black River Falls Fire Chief Steve Schreiber. "We were not only battling the fire. We had to battle with the cold and our water turning to ice on the ground," said Schreiber in a statement.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department said initial reports showed a Lunda employee was in the shop area when the fire started. They are still investigating how the fire actually started.

The employee received burns on his hands and legs from the fire. He was initially taken to Black River Memorial Hospital then later transferred to the UW-Madison Burn Unit for additional treatment. The employee's injuries are described as non-life threatening according to a statement from Jackson County.

The Black River Falls Fire Department was assisted by Merrillan and Hixton Fire Departments in putting out the fire.

38 firefighters battled the blaze for more than nine hours. No other businesses or residences nearby were affected by the fire.

The sheriff's department said the stretch of Highway 27 from 7th Avenue to US Highway 12 in Brockway will remain blocked off for the rest of the day.

Lunda Construction is aware of the fire and has not released a statement.
