Once fired by UW-L, Gross wants back in

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)  UW-La Crosse welcomed back an old friend.
Former men's basketball coach Charlie Gross was on campus Thursday interviewing for the vacant director of athletics position.

Gross has spent the last 15 years in administration, including the last 6 as the senior associate athletics director at UW-Milwaukee.
He was UW-L's men's basketball coach from 1992 to 2000.
Gross went through a bitter departure from UW-L when his contract wasn't renewed in March of 2000.
Time has healed those wounds though and now he wants to lead the program that once fired him.

"When I left I wanted to make sure the University was educated and they knew some of the things they needed to do for the basketball program to try to help it and move itself forward.  I've thrived in my role of being an athletic administrator.  So, when I look back on my time here, it was a very enjoyable time.  I enjoyed coaching here.  I enjoyed the University.  It attracted me at one time to come here.  Those same elements within the University exist," Gross said.

Gross is one of three finalists.

Rick Goeb had his interview on Tuesday and Kim Blum will have hers on Monday.

Blum is the current interim director of athletics at UW-La Crosse.
