UW-L wins NCGA Championships for 16th time

Posted: Updated:
La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - The UW-La Crosse women's gymnastics team scored the second-highest team score total in National Collegiate Gymnastics Association history Friday night on its way to a record 16th national championship.

The Eagles' 191.525 was three tenths of a point better than Ursinus College and UW-Whitewater, who shared second place. Whitewater had won the previous three national titles, and La Crosse the four before that.

UW-L set a season-best mark on vault and balance beam with scores of 48.00 and 47.95, respectively. Freshman Amy Enright tied for first individually on the uneven bars with a score of 9.675. She later finished third in the all-around competition to earn NCGA All-America honors. Elsa Spitzmueller won the floor exercise with a 9.775.

All 16 titles have come under the leadership of Barbara Gibson, the first in 1986. She said in practice earlier this week her team's goal was to score a 191. It ended up with a 191.525, the second-highest score in NCGA Championship history.

The College at Brockport (New York) finished fourth with a score of 190.90, State University of New York Cortland finished fifth with a score of 187.975, and UW-Stout finished sixth with a score of 187.85.

The individual event championships start at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Hall.
