Carlson edged Ty Majeski and Brad Powell to the finish line. Carlson, the defending series champion, worked his way from midpack early and was riding in third when the caution came out.
Drivers are able to choose which lane they restart in by driving on either the high or low side of a cone. Race leader Mike Carlson and Majeski chose the inside lane, allowing Steve Carlson to restart on the front row. He got a jump on Mike Carlson when the green flag flew once again, completing the pass into the first corner and building a comfortable lead down the backstretch.
Earlier in the day, Nick Clements broke the Sportsmen track record in qualifying and followed it up with a series feature win as well at the 5/8 mile oval. He appears to have adapted to the new rules package the quickest - the cars can have rear windshields and a rear spoiler this season - after working his way through the pack and beating Tony Leis to the line.
He also avoided some early cautions. Steve Bachman and Jake Arneson made contact down the backstretch, resulting in Arneson crashing hard into the wall.
A few laps later, Mandi Eckelberg hit the wall exiting turn 4 and had to abandon her car as it erupted in flame. She exited the car under her own power, but was helped to the infield.
Saturday night racing returns May 16.
