The project to add a second set of railroad tracks through parts of La Crosse has won final approval.
The Army Corps of Engineers gave its permission for the project by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad.
The project will add tracks through the La Crosse marsh, about eight acres of wetlands.
The approval comes despite objections over the environmental impact.
In February, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources granted BNSF a wetland permit to build the second track.
