Tools for Schools Award brings sign language DVDs to North Woods International School

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

First graders at North Woods International School will have more resources for learning sign language thanks to a Tools for Schools Award.

Jocelyn Buxton, this month's winner of the $500 award, will be putting the money towards stories on DVD. The stories are read aloud and signed in American Sign Language, so students can listen and follow along in sign language.

Buxton has three kids in her room with hearing impairment, and said for those students signing is crucial. "They can hear a lot of what I say through the microphone that I wear, but they don't catch everything, so the signing is the other part," Buxton said.

But the benefit of the DVDs goes beyond just students with hearing impairment.

"Our school is a global school, and we have a Spanish immersion, where kids are learning that language, so it's neat to be able to learn a language that isn't a spoken language, but to learn another language that we can, you know, adapt to everyone's needs," Buxton said.

Buxton said she also plans to share the DVDs with students in other classes.
