New Richmond (WQOW) - Wednesday evening three inmates escaped from the St. Croix Correctional Center located in New Richmond, according to the New Richmond Police Department.

The correctional facility is a minimum security center. Authorities said the inmates were last seen wearing long underwear tops and bottoms, which were covered with gray shorts and running shoes.

Jesse Jamal Fairley, 26, is 5' 8" tall and weighs approximately 142 pounds. He is originally from the St. Croix County area and has family in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fairley was serving a sentence for burglary. Andrew Lee Vance, 21, is 6' 4" tall and weighs approximately 189 pounds. He is originally from Madison and is serving a sentence for operating a motor vehicle without owners consent and burglary. Kyle J. Peterson, 20, is 5' 10" tall and weighs approximately 165 pounds. He is formerly from Winnebago County and is serving a sentence for forgery and possession of drugs.

The three served their time in prison and were transferred to the correctional facility where they each had less than six months left.

“Why the inmates out there decided to run out the door when at the most you're looking at six months before they come back into the general public, who knows,” said Mark Samelstad, Police Chief for New Richmond Police Department.

The search for the three inmates continues. Authorities said their search includes K9 units, two airplanes, several law enforcement agencies and fire personnel. The sheriff's department is asking residents to remain alert and report any suspicious people or activity. Wednesday night they searched area neighborhoods as well. Melissa and Chad Konsela had their backyard searched.

“This doesn't happen here everyday. No, no, it almost felt like being in a movie, watching helicopters going overhead and shining in the woods and the yards and you see it on tv but you never think it will happen in your own backyard. It was still concerning we didn't sleep,” said the Konselas.

The New Richmond School District feared for the safety of students. As the sun rose Thursday morning with no sign of the missing men. They decided to take action.

“It was originally just a late start at first and then it turned into a full day that was canceled,” said Melissa Konsela.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office said a car was stolen in the vicinity of the correctional facility. Authorities are not sure if it is related to the escape. The vehicle is a silver Hyundai Sonata with Wisconsin registration 597 LMS.

The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the three inmates are asked to call the St. Croix County Dispatch at (715) 386-4704 or contact Detective Yehlik at (715) 246-6667.
