Tick-borne disease kills five elk in Jackson County

Posted: Updated:
Madison, WI (WXOW) - - A disease carried by a tick has killed five of the 26 elk recently brought to Wisconsin from Kentucky.

According to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, four calves and one adult female elk were afflicted with Babesiosis, a disease carried by a tick-borne parasite.

The elk arrived in Jackson County in March as part of an agreement with Kentucky to send up to 150 elk with the help of donations.

The plan is for the elk to be released into the Black River State Forest as an additional attraction for tourists.

The surviving elk are held in a quarantine pen where they will remain until at least mid-June.

Officials believe the elk were infected after they arrived in Wisconsin.
