Eagles win Midwest Regional, advance to first World Series

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - On a day filled with scattered rain drops at Copeland Park, it was only fitting Chris Schwarz was drenched by a water cooler bucket at the end of it.

His UW-La Crosse Eagles beat Coe College twice Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional to advance to its first-ever DIII Championship.

UW-L had to beat Coe two times to win the double-elimination tournament. They outlasted the Kohawks 5-4 in the first game of the day, forcing a winner-take-all second contest later in the afternoon, which UW-L won 15-4 after a 7-run sixth and stringing together 18 hits to claim the Regional crown.

"It's just a little bit surreal," Schwarz said. "We expected to win the tournament, but now it's happened and it's done with. I'm just so happy for the players. There's just no quit, they just keep fighting and fighting."

"So many emotions right now, it's hard to put a finger on it," closer Jameson Sadowske said. "That legacy of ours for this (2015) squad is just unbelievable. It's been something we've wanted to do since the fall, so it's great that our hard work has finally paid off."

Six Eagles were named to the All-Tournament team, led by junior outfielder Taylor Kohlwey, who was named the tournament's MVP. He went 4 for 5 in the second game with 4 RBI, and finished the day with seven hits and six runs scored.

"It's unbelievable, just coming from this area, just knowing that we're going to the World Series is just unbelievable," he said. "From where we were a couple years ago to where the program is at now, where it is now and where it's going, it's just an unbelievable feeling."

Alex Cordova also provided four hits in the second game and scored three runs. Five UW-L players finished with two or more hits.

UW-L will face Salisbury on Friday night at 7:45 p.m. in the World Series in Appleton. It's also a double-elimination tournament.
