New hotels, renovation projects, campus improvements. La Crosse's downtown is seeing it's share of new construction projects all set to be complete within the next two years."It's just a really exciting time for downtown La Crosse. We have so many private and public development projects going on in the city," said Robin Moses, Executive Director of Downtown Mainstreet Inc.
More than a dozen construction projects are taking place in downtown including four new hotels. Including a Hampton Inn on 2nd and La Crosse streets, a Fairfield Inn at 3rd and Cass, a Hilton Home2 Suites at 2nd and Jay, the Charmant Hotel on State Street and don't forget the multi-use development on the county parking lot across from the court house.
"The growth here is greater than any other Wisconsin city," added Moses, who said the hotels will provide space for an extra 100,000 visitors to the La Crosse area.
Part of the downtown construction is happening right at Western Technical College, where they have four major building projects costing $70 million.
The downtown projects could help create at least 3,000 jobs and $19 million in visitor spending, said Moses.
Burt Hammons, La Crosse resident for nearly 20 years, said of the new hotels, "It's going to attract new business, people, its a destination."
Hammons said he sees a need for more hotels but he's unsure exactly how many, "I don't know-this one is unique boutique-it'll attract a different clientele. A lot of these things we tend to go overboard. We've had a shortage, but we may go the other way and have too many."The city also has street and road improvement projects planned including a round-a-bout on Cass and Seventh streets.
The city hopes to begin construction on that in 2017.
