Long day worth it for West Salem

ALTOONA, Wis. (WXOW)  West Salem had to work a little longer and harder than expected at Tuesday's Sectional.

But it was well worth it.

The Panthers earned their first trip to the WIAA Spring Baseball Tournament with an 8-5 win over Hayward in the Sectional Championship.

West Salem broke the game open in the 6th when Sam Loughan and Colin Hass delivered run-scoring base hits.

The Panthers led 8-1 before a late Hayward rally came up short.

Earlier in the afternoon, West Salem beat Prescott 4-3 in 11 innings.

The winning run scored on a Bailey Valencia hit that scored Jesse Sommer.

"In order to advance to state against two great teams you have ot have all three phases working for you today.  And we sure did.  The pitching, the defense, the timely hitting, we put it all together.  All together in one day and I'm so proud of these guys," said Panthers head coach Chuck Ihle.

West Salem will play Milwaukee Lutheran in the division two semifinals Wednesday, June 17 in Appleton.
