Aquinas, West Salem look ahead to next big step

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW)  Aquinas and West Salem are catching their breath after breath-taking runs through the sectional baseball tournaments Tuesday.
Both teams earned their way to state but in different ways.

The Blugolds leaving no doubt about their state title contender status after easily dismantling Neillsville and Wisconsin Heights.
There are many reasons for their success, but pitching stands out.
Aquinas did not allow a run in any of their four tournament games, led by Alex Schulte and Rudy Rott.

"We're all just working hard for each other, trying to make each other better even though it's late in the year.  We're just trying to win games right now.  We're not worried about anything else.  We're just confident and having fun," said Rott.
"Their presence on the hill, whether they're throwing balls or strikes, the confidence they provide to the rest of the guys becomes very evident that our players play with confidence because those two are on the hill.  It's fun just to sit back and watch those two perform," said head coach Scott Bagniefski.      Aquinas will play Marathon in a division three semifinal next week Wednesday in Appleton.

West Salem took a different route to their sectional championship.
They needed extra innings to beat Prescott in the semifinal.
Then, with a quick turnaround, beat Hayward 8-5 for the sectional championship.
The Coulee Conference co-champs putting it all together at the right time.

"We'll just compete with the best.  We competed with the best right here.  When we go to State we're going to compete with the best and have fun doing it," said West Salem head coach Chuck Ihle.

The Panthers will play Milwaukee Lutheran in a division two semifinal next week Wednesday evening.
