Heartbreaking finale for Aquinas baseball

Posted: Updated:
Aquinas' bid to win the Division 3 state baseball title came to a shocking and heartbreaking end in Appleton Thursday.

Lake Country Lutheran rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat the Blugolds, 5-4.

Joe Lipsky's two-out two-run single scored the tying and winning runs for the Lightning.  The rally came after an improbable rally for Aquinas in the top half of the inning.

Trailing 2-1, the Blugolds scored three times. Alex Schulte had a run-scoring single to tie the game. Andy Gundersen picked up an RBI on an error by LCL to give the Blugolds the lead. Jacob Horstman added a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run advantage for Aquinas heading into the bottom of the 7th.

That's when LCL scored three runs off Aquinas closer Alex Dee to secure the come-from-behind win.

"I don't know how to put it into words. I love every single one of these guys. It was a blast all year. We made it where we wanted to get. It was really fun. I don't know what else to say," said Aquinas senior Rudy Rott.

"We were all really excited, we thought we were going to win it. Then they just made plays, they hit the ball, found some holes," said Dee, who ended up as the losing pitcher.

"I tip my hat to them, they went out and won that game. There's nothing we did wrong there. You know it's really disappointing if you make some mistakes, but our guys didn't make any mistakes, they hit good pitches, and hats off to them. That's just life and that's sports. You have two good teams going. It was a great battle and it was a great season for us. I was telling them just keep it in perspective here," said Aquinas head coach Scott Bagniefski.

Aquinas finished their season with a 27-4 record.
