Is Gard the next one to lead Wisconsin Basketball?

Big names are sure to circulate among the national media when it comes to filling the Badgers men's basketball opening next summer.

But they may not have to look far.

Greg Gard has been an assistant under Ryan for 20 seasons, including all 14 at Wisconsin.

Ryan has been grooming Gard to take over for Ryan when this moment came and said in a statement Monday that he hopes Gard will become the next head coach.

Gard is the Badgers recruiting coordinator and was elevated to associate head coach in 2008.

No word on if the university will conduct a nationwide search, but Gard is viewed very favorably among the players.

"A lot of the success you see is because of Coach Gard. The development of the players. Coach Gard, Coach Close, both those guys are hands all over the development of the players as much as Coach Ryan is. And that's not always the case in a lot of places. But it is here. I think all the former players, Coach Gard has out vote of confidence," said former Badger Brian Butch, who played for Ryan and Gard from 2004-2008.
