Tomah, WI (AP) - Mental health services were one of the main focuses at the Tomah VA today.

The medical center invited community members to attend an open house Tuesday afternoon.

Veterans were able to attend the event and visit different tents featuring new age, alternative services to treat mental health issues.

Services like telehealth, integrative health, healing touch, and music therapy are some the VA offers.

Officials say holistic health is becoming more popular. "Integrative medicine seeks to bring in complimentary and alternative options to traditional western medicine. A lot of that is based in eastern medicine, things like yoga, aromatherapy, tai chi, acupuncture. These are different things that we're trying to incorporate at the Tomah Va," said Patient Center Care and Coordinator, Danielle Puccetti.

Puccetti added that, a labyrinth, otherwise known as a circular walking area was built a few years ago in the VA courtyard. It serves as a meditation method to relieve stress. Jeannette Jasinski, Facilitator Telehealth Communicator at the Tomah VA says telehealth is the way of the future.

"Telehealth is a type of virtual care and what it does is it brings that specialized care closer to home. Particularly for those veterans that live in a more rural area," said Jasinski.

Computer equipment creates flexibility for patients to remain at home and meet virtually with health providers. The device talks veterans through it's use.
