A Secret Service agent has testified that a Wisconsin man charged with threatening to kill President Barack Obama said he planned to carry out an assassination with a slingshot.

Secret Service Special Agent Jeffrey Ferris testified Thursday at a detention hearing for 55-year-old Brian Dutcher of Tomah. He says Dutcher made the statement in an interview after being detained.

Prosecutors say Dutcher traveled to La Crosse, where Obama was scheduled to make a speech earlier this month. An affidavit says Dutcher told a library security guard he would "take (Obama) out" if he got the chance.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports defense attorney Joseph Bugni asked that Dutcher be released to a friend. But Magistrate Judge Stephen Crocker ruled Dutcher was a danger and a flight risk and ordered that he remain in custody pending a trial.

The Tomah man accused of threatening President Obama when he visited La Crosse last week appears in federal court.

Brian Dutcher, 55, had a brief hearing in front of Judge Stephen Crocker Tuesday morning.

In the criminal complaint filed with the court, Dutcher is quoted as saying that "if I get a chance I'll take him out and I'll take the shot."

The complaint said that Dutcher made the comment on July 1, the day before President Obama was schedule to speak at UW-La Crosse. The complaint said that Dutcher made his comments to a security guard at the La Crosse Public Library.

Later that day, the complaint said that Dutcher told a La Crosse Police detective that his threat was serious and he "would not have said what he said if he didn't intend to carry it out."

He had also made similar statements on his Facebook page.

According to court records, Dutcher is scheduled for a detention hearing on Thursday afternoon in Madison.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Federal charges have been brought against a Tomah man for making threats against President Obama.

The criminal complaint states 55-year-old Brian Dutcher approached a security guard at the La Crosse Public Library Monday.  While talking, Dutcher said he knew the President was in town and "if I get a chance, I'll take him out and I'll take the shot."

Dutcher was interviewed by the Secret Service and admitted to making the statement to the security guard.  He went on to say he made similar statements on his Facebook page.

A posting on Dutcher's page, dated June 30, read "that's it!  Thursday I will be in La Crosse.  Hopefully I will get a clear shot at the pretend president.  Killing him is our CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY!"

Monday, Dutcher stated to a La Crosse police detective his threat was serious and he would not have said what he said if he didn't intend to carry it out.

U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil tells the Wisconsin State Journal authorities sought a civil commitment and Dutcher was being held in the mental health facility.

Court records don't list an attorney for Dutcher.
