The state of Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to permanently expand the list of projects and activities that don't require an environmental analysis.
The list includes issuing a construction or renewal permit for minor air pollution sources, decisions related to existing factory facilities, issuing licenses or registrations for well drillers, temporary dam draw-downs and dam repairs, and approval of construction plans for waste-water facilities.
The shift isn't favored by environmental groups, who feel the exemptions could lead to potential damage to Wisconsin's air and water quality.
The DNR plans to ask for permission to expand their list from its board next month.
The board is set to vote on the changes at a meeting in Horicon, Wisconsin on August, 12.
