Zebra mussels found in lake in northwestern Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - -

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it has confirmed the presence of invasive zebra mussels in Big Cormorant Lake in northwestern Minnesota's Becker County.

The agency said in a news release Monday that three live zebra mussels were found in different areas of the lake after a three-day search. Mark Ranweiler with the Department of Natural Resources says treatment doesn't appear possible because the mussels aren't localized in one area.

According to the agency, the source of the mussels' introduction into the lake could not be confirmed. The agency says owners of water-related equipment should inspect it for mussels.

Zebra mussels can damage boat motors and clog water pipes. Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/1JNjmfy ) reports the mussels have been found in more than 200 Minnesota lakes and rivers, including in two other Becker County lakes last summer.
