When you say, Julia Belle Swain, chances are people know what you're talking about. It's part of La Crosse history.
One of five steamboats on the Mississippi and the only one on the upper Mississippi, at least until 2008. Deterioration caused problems for the boat. But a group of local investors is working to make the repairs with an ultimate goal of returning the Julia Belle to the river.
The first step, repairing the hull. That required a trip to Dubuque, Iowa and Newt Marine. With that work completed, the steamboat is ready to make the trip back to La Crosse.
