There are signs that Viroqua may be on the verge of turning their program around.
It starts with numbers.
They had just 30 players out for football in the entire program last year. This from a team that's won just three games in the last three seasons.
The Blackhawks are installing a new option offense this fall in the hopes of taking advantage of some of their athletes at the skill positions. But just having more bodies in uniform should give them a boost.
"It gives us more breaks. With more guys it gives us more energy. Guys are a little more fired up. But we're a pretty close knit group and that helps a lot," said quarterback Kody Sloane.
"We competed last year in many of the games, besides the Arcadia game. We competed. We were in games and I think that they've worked hard in the off season and they're ready to make that step from competing to winning," said head coach Bill Hannah.
Viroqua opens the season against Cuba City.
