There are encouraging signs for La Crescent football in 20-15.
Head coach Brad Groth has seen roster numbers almost double from last year. The Lancers return 11 starters, mostly at the skill positions, from a team that went 2-6.
Those returners will be counted on to set the tone for this year's squad.
"It's huge because they've been such great leaders too. They're not just teammates but they're also teachers. They've been teaching guys here and there and giving them pointers. So that experience along with the guys coming back has been huge for us," said Groth, who's in his second season as head coach at La Crescent.
"This year we actually have a lot more guys so I'm trying to get more footwork in so I know what we got and how fast they (our receivers) are. I'm trying to get routes down, timing down," said quarterback Josh DeBoer.
Minnesota schools are going to district play this season.
So La Crescent will open the season against Caledonia. The two nearby schools haven't played each other for nearly 20 years.
That game is Saturday at Caledonia.
