After filling in for injured quarterbacks on three occasions this season, UW-L sophomore quarterback John Tackett will get his chance to start this week against UW-Whitewater.
Tackett relieved an injured Drew David in the first quarter of Saturday's game against UW-Stout and led the Eagles to a 28-21 win. He has thrown four touchdown passes in three games this season after playing in five games (starting two) as a freshman last season.
"I think it's different for him than probably your average guy who's a backup normally," Eagles head coach Joel Dettwiler said. "He's a mature kid, he can handle it, he knows what to expect. He understands the gameplans we've had before, and has always been ready to go in and has gone in when it's been important."
As the team prepares for a quick turnaround against UW-Whitewater on Friday, Tackett said his mental preparation hasn't changed despite being named the starter.
"We're always preparing to go in, every time we get in the film room and look at everything, it's always as if we're running it in the game," Tackett said.
Kickoff on Friday is set for 7 p.m. at Perkins Field.
