One person is in custody after an early Sunday morning shooting at a home in rural Jackson County.

Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera said in a statement that the Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from a man saying he shot someone in the Town of Knapp just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

"The person cooperated, so did not leave the scene and waited for emergency responders. I believe we were on the scene in a little over ten minutes. One was there earlier because they were closer. So within fifteen to twenty minutes we were assessing the situation and put the person into custody probably within a half hour," said Waldera.

The gunshot victim was dead when deputies and EMS services arrived to N2675 Arrow Road in Jackson County. Sheriff Waldera said the sheriff's office is conducting a what they're calling a death investigation.

The statement said the man who said he shot the victim is in custody. Officers said he was taken from the scene and interviewed about what happened. The scene was secured, and officers requested additional investigative resources.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigations agents, Wisconsin Crime Lab, and the Wisconsin State Patrol crime scene diagramming/reconstruction units were requested to assist with the investigation.

More information is expected from the sheriff's office later on Sunday.

We will provide updates as they become available.
