December Jefferson Award Winner: Pat Stephens

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

His list of community volunteerism is three or four pages long.  And when told he was this month's Jefferson Award winner, Pat Stephens said he was humbled, but would accept it on behalf of the other volunteers who contribute with him.

His friends describe Pat as a servant.  In fact, Janie Morgan says she doesn't know anyone else quite like Pat whose mission is making the community a better place to live.

One of the organizations to which he contributes time is Rotary Lights.  Pat is the president.  He says the project began during a regular Rotary Club meeting.  Fellow Rotarian Duane Moore had just returned from Oklahoma where he walked through a small college decorated for the holidays.  During the meeting he asked, "who wants to chair this?"  Pat Stephens was sitting in the back of the room, but raised his hand immediately.  That was 21 years ago.  Another of Pat's friends, Dave Clements, says almost all of the people who joined him on the board at that time are still with him.  Clements says, what does that say about Pat's ability to lead?

If you know someone who makes the community a better place through volunteerism, nominate them.  Go to our homepage and click on community, then on Jefferson Awards.
