When you think about Christmas, you may think of the presents, food, and Santa Claus.
One local pastor is reminding people, of what he says, is the true meaning of the holiday.
Prince of Peace Pastor Kent Johnson says Christmas is about remembering the story of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus in Bethlehem. He says it's a story about bringing light to a world of darkness, and says it's still relevant today.
"People today are filled with fear in a way more than I have seen in the past. They are fearful. They're uncertain. They're searching for peace and truth in a time of fear," said Johnson.
Johnson said this applies to current events like the Syrian refugee crisis, "Jesus, Joseph, and Mary fleeing as refugees to Egypt because of fear for their survival. What does that mean for us? We have a problem with refugees today. How do we welcome and receive the gift of the other, the gift of the stranger, just as Christ himself was a refugee in Egypt."
Prince of Peace in La Crescent has service Thursday at 11:00 p.m. and at 10:00 a.m. Christmas morning.
