An in-state sweep was prevented and Greg Gard picked up his first win as the Badgers new head coach Wednesday night.
Wisconsin saw a 30-point lead over UW-Green Bay all but disappear in a second half comeback.
Ultimately, the Badgers prevailed, pulling out the 84-79 win.
Gard went to the bench early and frequently with sophomore Jordan Hill coming up big.
Hill came into last nights game with no points, no assists, and one rebound in seven games.
But he made a massive difference against the Phoenix, scoring ten points, grabbing four boards and dishing out four assists.
"I told the players last week that, actually, Tuesday night or Wednesday that, if they weren't ready, get ready, because I was going to try to find ways to have people in position to help this team. Jordan did a real good job of coming off and that will be something for him to build upon," Gard said.
"After I got up and down the court a couple of times, I felt like I belonged, and I've been waiting a long time for an opportunity and I tried to make the most of it," said Hill.
Wisconsin will open Big Ten play next week against Purdue.
