UPDATE: No official ID on Jackson County house fire victim

UPDATE: The Jackson County Sheriff's Department says the victim in a deadly house fire on Saturday morning has not been identified due to the condition of the body.

According to the department, the victim appears to be the owner and occupant of the residence, but until DNA results confirm the identity, no name will be released.

The department has made contact with the potential victim's family.


One person was found dead following a house fire in Jackson County Saturday morning.

Around 1:00 a.m., the Jackson County Sheriff's Office received a call about a house fire at 104 Grand Street in the Village of Merrillan.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Merrillan and Alma Center Fire Departments, and personnel from the Black Rivers Falls and Hatfield Fire Departments were on the scene.

One person was found dead inside the home. The deceased person was transported to Madison for an autopsy. The name of the person is not being released pending notification of the family.

The incident is still under investigation.
