Wisconsin Assembly passes bills to combat heroin use

Madison, WI (WXOW) - -

The Wisconsin Senate will consider four bills designed to combat heroin use.  The bill's author, John Nygren, expects those bills to pass.

Nygren is familiar with the problems caused by heroin use.  His daughter nearly overdosed.  He says she's in recovery now, but not recovered.  He says she will live with her addition for the rest of her life.

One of the bills requires doctors to check the state database for opiate drug prescriptions before writing new prescriptions.  Another requires doctors and health care providers to be notified if a patient overdoses or has other criminal issues.  The other bills require pain clinics to receive notification and set up a database for methadone clinics.

Heroin use and abuse is an issue the governor spoke with us about.  And it's an issue the police chief discussed during a recent town hall meeting with U.S. Senator Ron Johnson.  You can hear from Nygren, the governor and La Crosse Police Chief Ron Tischer by clicking on the attached story.
