MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota won't see temperatures above zero for a couple more days.

Subzero temperatures are reported statewide Sunday as an arctic air mass grips Minnesota. Fosston, in the northwestern part of the state, bottomed out at 36 degrees below.

The cold is putting a strain on car batteries in the Twin Cities. A spokeswoman for AAA auto club tells the Star Tribune its call volume for help is 38 percent higher than on a normal winter Sunday.

WDIO-TV reports a homeowner's attempt to thaw pipes in a West Duluth home caused a fire that led to $37,000 in damage.

It was so cold in western Minnesota that traffic lights went dark Sunday morning in Montevideo when an electrical transformer blew.

Temperatures in Minnesota aren't expected to get above zero until Tuesday.
