Mike Schmidt is a former UW-La Crosse football captain.
Now he'll get a chance to lead the program as it's head coach.
UW-La Crosse named Schmidt their new head coach in a news release this evening.
Schmidt spent last season as the defensive coordinator at UW-Platteville.
Before that, he was a defensive assistant at the University of Dubuque.
In the news release Schmidt said “To say I am honored would be an understatement. I want to thank Chancellor Gow, Dr. Paula Knudson, the search and screen committee, and especially Kim Blum for this opportunity of a lifetime. Being named the head football coach at UWL is a humbling responsibility and we are thrilled for the challenge. UWL football will be back as the pinnacle of NCAA Division III football."
A news conference is set for Friday at 10 AM at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center.
