Aquinas learns from mid-season struggles on run to State

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

It only seems appropriate that Coulee Region basketball will be on display in full force in Madison this week.

Four area teams qualified for the WIAA Boys State Tournament.

Ironically, one of the surprises is a team we've seen down their frequently in recent years,  Aquinas.

The Blugolds finished the regular season at 11-11 before going on their playoff run. They had a stretch in the middle of the season in which they lost 10 out of 13, but against some really good competition.

Since then though, they've won 6 straight.

"Our resilience and just battling through those tough times. We kind of needed those loses to know what kind of team we were  and figure out who we are in practice and trying to band those guys together. It took us awhile but we are getting hot at the right time," said senior Alex Schulte.

"We really had three parts to our season. We started out pretty well and then one of our key players, Chris Ancius got hurt and we went into a little bit of a funk, but our competition was really good. But the bottom line is we've had some adversity but we've come through it really well," said head coach Sam Servais.

Aquinas is making their 7th trip to the WIAA State Tournament.

The last time was in 2013 when they won it all with Bronson Koenig leading the way.

The Blugolds will play Dominican in a Division 4 semifinal Thursday evening at 6:35.
