MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes will enter the 2016 NBA draft while also leaving open the possibility of returning to the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team for his senior season.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, a UW source confirmed a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports Wednesday that said Hayes will enter the draft but won’t sign with an agent immediately.
A change in the entry process this year gives potential early enrollees more time to make an informed decision. Hayes can attend the combine in Chicago in mid-May if he’s invited and gather feedback and give himself a chance to improve his stock.
As long as he doesn’t sign with an agent, Hayes has until the May 25 deadline to make his decision on whether or not to pull out of the draft.
Hayes submitted paperwork last week for the draft after receiving the recommendation from Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard.
The 6-foot-8 Hayes just finished his junior season by scoring a team-high 15.7 points per game. He is known for his inside-out game as well as an offbeat personality.
Hayes fell into a shooting funk in the NCAA tournament, going 9 of 39 from the field and 2 of 15 from 3-point range. Both 3s came in the 61-56 loss in the Sweet 16 to Notre Dame.
Hayes played key roles in Wisconsin's run to the Final Four in his freshman and sophomore seasons.
