Investigators from the Winona County Sheriff's Office, Lewiston Police, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension have swarmed to a home at 135 South Fremont Street in Lewiston, after a woman's body was found early Saturday in a wooded area east of Lewiston.
Winona County Sheriff Ron Ganrude said a person was taken into custody on probable cause of 2nd degree homicide, but has not yet been charged.
The roster at the Winona County Detention Center shows that Kyle Benjamin Allers, 23, was arrested and booked on a murder charge at 6:53 a.m.
"The investigation began on Friday, May 13 at 6:22 p.m. after a caller provided information about a possible homicide," said Sheriff Ganrude in a statement to reporters. "Based on information developed during the course of the investigation, law enforcement personnel began a search for the woman around 8 p.m. Friday. A woman's body was discovered at approximately 12:35 a.m. Saturday in a wooded area about three-quarters of a mile off the road near the intersection of County Road 25 and County Road 23 east of Lewiston."
Sheriff Ganrude said the woman's body was taken to the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Rochester for formal identification and an autopsy. The sheriff said investigators do not think there is any ongoing threat to the public.
The home at 135 South Fremont is next to the Lewiston-Altura Elementary School on the south side of the community.
Assisting the sheriff and deputies in the search were the Winona County S.O.A.R. (Search, Operational Assistance, Rescue) Team, the Winona and Lewiston police departments and the Minnesota State Patrol.
