DNR: Hunters killed 11 percent more turkeys this spring

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- -

Wisconsin wildlife officials say hunters killed more turkeys this spring than last.

The Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Friday that hunters registered 45,496 birds during the spring season, up 11 percent from the 2015 spring season. The agency issued 213,672 permits, up from 208,250 permits last year.

The statewide success rate was 21.3 percent, up from 19.7 percent in 2015.

DNR officials attributed hunters' success to strong breeding activity after a mild winter and good weather conditions.

Permits for the fall season are now available. That season runs from Sept. 17 to Nov. 18. The deadline for applying for a permit is Aug. 1.
