In mid-March of 2015, a City Brewery supervisor discovered the damaged statue of King Gambrinus outside of the brewery entrance.
With damages estimated at more than $700 at the time of discovery, the statue was shipped off to undergo repairs.
Randy Hughes, Brewmaster at City Brewery said after observing the statue more in depth, employees with the brewery knew the thin, fiberglass structure was in need of desperate upgrades.
"After his arm broke off, we got looking at it and the whole thing was just, I don't know how it was even standing up, it stood out there for decades. So what we did is we took it down, shipped it over to an artist over in Sparta to basically put it back together, make a mold, and make a new one," said Hughes.
The new statue will be made of fiberglass like the old one; however, Hughes stressed it will be much more durable.
King Gambrinus is set to be back on his "throne" long before Oktoberfest which will take place September 29 through October 2.
